Chapter 21

‘Here he comes,’ Birdie said, watching through the binoculars as Seb left Rawlings’ property.

What on earth was he doing there? She trusted her gut and knew, without question, that it was legitimate, whatever Twiggy might try to imply. For some reason, Twiggy was so blinkered as far as Seb was concerned and couldn’t see him for who he really was. And he said she had the blind spot. Fortunately, the next surveillance team had messaged to say they were caught up in a traffic hold-up and wouldn’t get there for a while longer. She’d been dreading having to explain about Seb to them.

‘How are we going to stop him?’ Twiggy asked.

‘We’ll wait for him to reach the end of the drive, and you can flash your lights. He should see us then.’

‘Okay.’ Twiggy turned on the engine and edged the car forward slightly, so they were now in view of the road in a more prominent position opposite Rawlings’ driveway.

Seb came to a halt when he reached the junction with the road, indicated to turn right, and drove straight out. Twiggy flashed his lights several times, but without success, because Seb kept on driving.

‘Damn. He didn’t see us,’ Birdie said, thumping her leg with a clenched fist.

‘Or he’s deliberately ignoring us.’

‘No, he’s not. Follow him, and put your foot down so we don’t lose him.’

Twiggy pulled out onto the road, which was clear, accelerated, and before long, they’d caught up with Seb. Twiggy tooted on his horn and flashed the car’s lights. Eventually, Seb indicated left and pulled into a lay-by. They drew up behind him, and Birdie jumped out of the car and ran over.

Seb opened the window, his engine still idling. ‘Birdie? What are you doing here?’ His brows furrowed.

‘It’s more like, what are you doing visiting Victor Rawlings?’ She rested her arm on the roof and glared at him.

‘It’s in relation to the case I’m working on with Whitney. His daughter is a person of interest.’

‘You have got to be kidding me.’

‘No, I’m not. Why would I do that?’

‘We have him under surveillance.’

‘You do?’ Seb’s eyes widened in amazement.

‘Yes. For goodness’ sake. What are the odds that we’d both be investigating the same person? It’s ridiculous. Especially as you’re investigating a twenty-five-year-old case, and we’re looking at something in the present.’

Birdie turned her head as Twiggy came marching over. ‘Well?’ he demanded, scowling at Seb, his hands on his hips. ‘What’s going on?’

‘That’s what we need to discuss. But we don’t want to be seen together out here. Why don’t we go to The Windmill pub?’ Birdie suggested.

‘Good idea,’ Seb said.

‘Do you know where it is?’

‘Yes, it’s on the outskirts of Market Harborough, about ten minutes from here. Would you like to drive alongside?’ Seb nodded at the empty passenger seat.

‘No, she doesn’t. She’s with me, and we’re on duty,’ Twiggy snapped.

Birdie’s head shot to the side. ‘That’s enough, Twig. You don’t have to go all defensive. We are on the same side, you know.’ She turned back to Seb.
